Ambiant music and synth often evokes a sense of the surreal or supernatural in listeners. The question I wonder about is 'why'. Might it be that we are hard-wired to know when a sound is 'natural', and when it is not, we perceive that intuitively - and it makes for a certain amount of discomfort? Much like a creature in the forest might be alarmed or disturbed by a sound that would not be generally present in it's natural habitat?
